had a horrible day today. couldn't start an iv, an aline or an epidural to save my life. worse yet, wet tapped that same patient (a complication from placing an epidural for those non medical types). argh. luckily i killed no one. ended up with a femoral aline and several neck lines (several patients)
(apologies for the extremely lingo filled post. had to vent.)
on the plus side went to have arab food with my buddy who finished his cardiac anesthesia fellowship. it was a good time, tasty food, good conversation, damn road construction detours though.

new residents
I showed my new residents how to put together an IV tubing setup today... they seemed extremely excited. i guess i take the easy things for granted.

(ECMO = Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation... more on ECMO another day... so complicated)

ECMO is easy, you just got to keep them from bleeding to death, and keep them from clotting to death.

Insanity
I sat for my boards (for the second time) last Saturday. I can't say i feel any better about compared to the first time. We'll see i guess. In my post boards insantity I invited the whole anesthesia department to my house for a BBQ. We'll see how many show up... I hope people show up, I can show off my messy new house, but I hope there's not too too many people.

Mentees
I just got assigned two new anesthesia residents as mentees... I guess that makes me a mentor. Scary huh?
I am wondering why if there are dozens of faculty members why I got assigned two residents out of twenty-four to be mentees. Whatever... I don't really mind.

First Day?
Technically, i believe that friday was my first day as an attending. I've had very bad luck on other first days of sorts. I had a patient die on my first day of residenc. And there have been many almosts on other various first days. No one one died. Yay. One guy did "accidentally" blow off part of his face with a shotgun. very unusual for this town. very lucky for him if it was truely an accident despite the fact he lost an eye. Hope people have a safe holiday.
